| text | Plasmodium falciparum hexose transporter 1 (PfHT1) facilitates import of glucose and fructose from extracellular space (Woodrow et al, 1999). This function is essential in Plasmodium metabolism, as the parasites lack pathways to synthesize energy stores. During growth of the trophozoite and its production of merozoites inside host erythrocytes, glucose uptake accelerates 100-fold (Warren & Manwell, 1954). Inhibiting PfHT1 is parasiticidal.
