textThe selective autophagic mechanism of targeting and removing pathogens after host cellular invasion is known as xenophagy. This includes a broad range of pathogens including bacteria and viruses. Once foreign entities are sensed, the Microtubule-associated proteins 1A/1B light chain 3B (MAP1LC3B) is processed and autophagosomes are formed where the pathogen is degraded by lysosome enzymes. Pathogens in response have evolved ways to evade or inihibit this autophagic mechanism (Bauckman K A. et al. 2015).
