| text | The receptors for GM-CSF, IL-3, and IL-5 all consist of a ligand-specific subunit and a common beta subunit (Bc). The alpha subunit binds the ligand on its own but with a low affinity. The Bc subunit confers high affinity ligand-binding and is important for most, if not all, of the signaling (Guthridge et al. 1998). There are two beta subunits in mice; one is equivvalent to human Bc and activated by GM-CSF/IL-3/IL-5, the other is the IL-3-specific Beta IL-3, which binds IL-3 with low affinity and forms a high-affinity receptor with mouse IL3r alpha. |
