textThe phosphacan proteoglycan represents the soluble form of a larger membrane protein, called Receptor-type tyrosine-protein phosphatase zeta/beta, that has an intracellular protein-tyrosine phosphatase domain. The carbonic anhydrase domain (CAH) of RPTPzeta/beta binds to contactin. This protein-tyrosine phosphatase expressed on the surface of glial cells binds to the cell recognition molecules contactin-1 on neuronal cells, promoting neurite outgrowth.
