| text | Spindle assembly is conserved in eukaryotes and is well documented in animals. Higher plants lack centrioles and therefore do not have the discrete microtubule organizing centres (MTOCs) that many eukaryotes possess. The prophase spindle arises from microtubules that nucleate, in a diffuse manner, over the entire surface of the G2/prophase nuclear envelope. Plants do have gamma-tubulin, which is involved in nucleating the alpha and beta subunits into microtubules. The microtubules have a defined polarity with their fast-growing plus ends radiating outwards and their nucleated minus ends at the nuclear surface. Eventually these dispersed foci completely encircle the nucleus and form a dense cage. The fully assembled bipolar spindle is barrel-shaped and lacks the aster of microtubules normally observed around the poles of other eukaryotes. |
