textMitosis, or the M phase, involves nuclear division, where two identical daughter nuclei are produced. Mitosis involves prophase, prometaphase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase. The phase between two M phases is called the interphase; it encompasses the G1, S, and G2 phases of the cell cycle. During cell division, microtubules (MTs) arrange into dynamic structures that drive the different stages of mitosis. The dynamic organization of MTs requires the functional cooperation of different MT-associated proteins (MAPs). Kinesins are a class of microtubule-associated proteins that posses a motor domain for binding to microtubules and, in general, allows movement along microtubules.

The basic mechanism of mitotic entry and progression in plants shares many features with that of yeast and animal cells, there are also several fundamental differences (mainly relating to cytokinesis) which are plant specific. The traditional stages of mitosis have been well defined cytologically:
Prophase - Chromatin condensation and nucleolar disassembly
Prometaphase - Nuclear envelope breakdown
Metaphase - Spindle formation and alignment of chromosomes
Anaphase - Chromosome segregation, paired chromosomes separate at the kinetochores and move along the spindle microtubules to the cell poles
Telophase - Assembly of nuclear membrane around the daughter nuclei.
